Efficient and sustainable parcel delivery: the parcel locker and Light Electric Vehicles (LEVs) as Driving Forces

13 November 2023

In an era of ever-growing e-commerce, but also of the pursuit of greening urban centers that are becoming more compact, we face the challenge of redefining Last Mile Delivery. Traffic jams, limited space, quality of life and environmental objectives challenge us to come up with innovative solutions. The search for sustainability is just as important as the pursuit of efficiency. In this evolution, parcel lockers play a crucial role together with Light Electric Vehicles (LEVs).

Parcel lockers as a Logistics Hub

Parcel lockers are the backbone of this shift. Not only do they provide a central delivery point for parcels within the city, but they can also act as hubs for other sustainable delivery methods. By optimizing routes and facilitating contactless transactions, parcel lockers are changing the face of Last Mile Delivery.

1. Logistical Efficiency

The use of parcel lockers not only reduces the need for multiple delivery attempts or trips to a collection point. It also optimizes the cost structure in the entire logistics chain. Efficiency is enhanced by automated processes and intelligent placement of lockers in strategic city areas, even behind the front door in apartment complexes, for example.

2. Sustainability in Action

Reducing the ecological footprint is an advantage of parcel lockers that should not be underestimated. By being able to consolidate deliveries and returns and reduce the number of vehicle movements, parcel lockers contribute to a sustainable transition. Emission reductions of up to 30% appear to be achieved! (source: Last Mile Prophets).

Light Electric Vehicles (LEVs): The Mobility Revolution

In addition to parcel lockers, Light Electric Vehicles (LEVs) are emerging as the ideal companion in fine-grained city logistics. Small electric vehicles offer an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional delivery vehicles. They are not only fast and agile, but also reduce noise and air pollution.

1. Agility and Speed

LEVs provide a flexible solution to the challenges of urban traffic. Their agility and speed make it possible to navigate through densely populated areas quickly and efficiently, significantly improving delivery speed.

2. Environmental friendliness

With zero emissions during use, LEVs contribute to improving air quality in urban environments. They embody the shift towards sustainable mobility and offer an alternative that benefits both businesses and consumers.

Towards Sustainable City Logistics

"Empowering Delivery" is therefore the theme that CiPiO and the Norwegian Paxster jointly promoted during the Parcel & Post Expo of 2023. We showed that parcel lockers and Light Electric Vehicles are the cornerstones of future city logistics.

To reinforce our words, we have demonstrated what this can look like in practice with our Last Mile Challenge. An incredible number of 100 boxes could be loaded into a Paxster, after which 5 boxes had to be placed at high speed in the CiPiObox. Not only did the enthusiastic participation of fair visitors produce fun scenes, it showed in real life what the future of the Last Mile looks like.
